Cosmos and Creation in the Twelfth Century World Premier

Location: Jordan Hall of Science

Dr. Margot Fassler and digital artist Christian Jara created this full-dome, digitized model of the stages of creation of the universe and of the motion of the cosmos based on the theological and scientific understandings of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). The score for the display is based on Hildegard’s compositions, and sung by Sacred Music Notre Dame students. Images are taken from an illuminated copy of Hildegard’s treatise Scivias, written in the 1140’s and copied in the last years of her life. This work brings artistic and theological works of a newly minted Doctor of the Church into the modern planetarium.
